Who needs to take the Lithuanian language exam?

As of 2026, new language requirements in Lithuania mean that some foreign nationals working in the country need to prove their Lithuanian language proficiency. The required level depends on the nature of their work and level of responsibility.

For most service sector employees, the relevant proficiency level is A1–A2. This applies to people who communicate with customers in their day-to-day work.

Which employees are subject to these requirements?

Basic or Category I (A1–A2 language proficiency level)

  • salespeople
  • customer service consultants
  • waiters and bartenders
  • taxi drivers
  • service workers (e.g. hairdressers, cosmetologists)

Category II (B1 language proficiency level)

  • school and kindergarten staff
  • social workers
  • nurses, medical assistants
  • employees of cultural institutions

Category III (B2 language proficiency level)

  • heads of state and municipal institutions
  • civil servants, officials
  • teachers teaching in the official language
  • aviation professionals

What is the A1 Lithuanian language exam?

A1 level means that a person can communicate in basic everyday situations. The exam does not test whether you speak fluently. What matters most is that you can understand simple information and communicate on everyday topics.

For many foreigners, A1 level is the first step towards integrating into life and work in Lithuania.

At A1 level, a person can usually:

  • to introduce yourself
  • to talk about yourself and your family
  • to answer simple questions
  • to ask for the information you need
  • to understand commonly used phrases
  • to complete basic forms or short questionnaires

What does the Lithuanian language exam consist of?

  • Listening. In this part, you need to understand short dialogues, announcements or everyday situations. It assesses whether you can understand the key information.

  • Reading. Reading tasks assess your ability to understand short texts, notices, messages and other information you may come across in everyday situations.

  • Writing. In the writing part, you may be asked to write a short message, complete a form or answer simple questions.

  • Speaking. This is often the most stressful part of the exam. You will be asked to introduce yourself, answer questions and take part in a short conversation.

What Our Students Say

The lessons covered everything I needed — new vocabulary, grammar, and even Lithuanian history and culture. I was very happy with the course structure and would recommend it to anyone learning Lithuanian.

Olga

I really liked the teaching style, and I’m glad we spent so much time practising speaking. It truly helped me gain confidence.

Iryna

I liked the exercises — they were practical and focused on real-life speaking, which was exactly what I needed to feel more confident speaking Lithuanian.

Yuliia

The course struck a great balance between reviewing grammar and practising real-life conversations. I wouldn’t change anything — everything was just right.

Olha

The information was presented very clearly and in an easy-to-understand way. I especially appreciated that, when explaining grammar rules, Rūta often used materials about famous Lithuanians, Lithuanian traditions, customs, poems and songs. This made the lessons truly interesting and gave me a much broader understanding of Lithuania and its culture.

Iryna, Your Content Goes Here

It was both useful and interesting to start learning Lithuanian from scratch and hear how the language sounds in real life. I especially enjoyed discussing word origins, roots and connections with other languages with Marytė — that was genuinely fascinating. One suggestion I would make is to allow a little more time for independent vocabulary learning before class, so that more lesson time could be spent on exercises and practical use.

Vital

I really enjoyed talking with the teacher about Lithuanian culture and history — it made the lessons much more than just language learning. The lesson structure was clear and well organised, and the dialogues were excellent for building confidence in speaking.

Maksim

I appreciated that the lessons focused on real everyday Lithuanian situations together with the basics of grammar — noun declension, word agreement in sentences, reading and creating short sentences. This gave me a solid and practical foundation from the very beginning.

Anton

Thank you for this opportunity and for the support and effort of the entire team. I believe we gained more confidence and genuinely enjoyed trying to speak Lithuanian — largely thanks to our teacher Vaida from Skrivanek, who guided us through every step of the course.

Askar

Thank you for organising the course — it was truly useful. We can now understand words and sentences in everyday life and have a better sense of what our colleagues are saying. The atmosphere in the lessons was really positive, and our teacher Vaida created a fun and supportive environment where learning felt natural. The effort put in by the whole team was excellent.

Julien

I really enjoyed the classes — the lessons were interesting, and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. I truly appreciate the effort Vaida put into every lesson and the support she gave us throughout the course.
